My Go-To Hike in West Kelowna: Smith Creek

Everyone in the Okanagan has a default trail — the one you do so often your legs just know the way.

Mine is Smith Creek. It’s close to home, dog-approved, and just enough of a climb to make me feel like I did something productive before getting on with the rest of the day.

Smith Creek is a trail network on the west side of West Kelowna, climbing through ponderosa pine forest up to ridgelines with views over the valley. You can keep it to a quick loop or string together something longer when you're feeling ambitious, avoiding your inbox, or pretending this was always part of your wellness plan.
Parking is right off Smith Creek Road, and the trailhead is signed, which in trail terms counts as luxury.

Why it's my favourite, in honest order:

The dog situation.

Smith Creek is one of the most dog-friendly trail systems around, and Bruno loves it.
The creek that runs along part of the trail is perfect for dogs who like to stop for a drink or cool off along the way. On a weekday morning, you’ll often meet more dogs than people — and every one of them looks like they’re having the best day of their lives.

The views — and the flowers.

Once you're up on the ridge, you get the whole valley.
And if you time it right in spring, the arrowleaf flower covers the hillsides in yellow and genuinely blows your mind. People pay for tulip festivals, and this is just sitting there, free, above West Kelowna.

The smell.

This sounds strange until you've done it.
Ponderosa pine in the summer heat smells incredible — warm, sweet, almost vanilla. Hiking through it at full temperature is one of the best parts of an Okanagan July, and I will not be answering questions.

The shade.

The underrated one. Because hiking in full sun is not my jam.
When summer is doing its convection-oven thing, the forested sections of Smith Creek stay nice and shady. Lower trails in the trees for hot afternoons, exposed ridge in the morning. That's the way.

The choose-your-own-adventure factor.

Smith Creek can be as easy or as ambitious as you want it to be. There are flatter sections if you just want a good walk with the dog, and there are climbs if you want to turn it into more of a workout.
That’s probably why I keep going back. Some days it’s a peaceful forest walk. Other days it’s a full bum workout with a view. Same trail system, different mood.

A few practical notes:

Smith Creek is a shared trail network, and that's what makes it feel so alive. One minute you're listening to birds in the trees, the next you're stepping aside for a mountain biker or hearing a dirt bike coming up the trail. You might see a hawk circling overhead, a coyote cutting across the hillside, or hear people talk about bear sightings in the area.
So basically: pay attention.
Keep an ear out, leash up around blind corners, and remember you're sharing the trail with bikes, dogs, wildlife, and other people who are all out there for the same reason — it's a pretty incredible place to be.
Wear real shoes. There are steep sections with loose rock that have opinions about flip flops. I'll admit I bought trail runners specifically for Smith Creek. I have run it a handful of times. The shoes remain excellent for walking.

Here's the part I can't help but mention:
Smith Creek isn't just a trail. It's a neighbourhood.
People live a five-minute walk from this trailhead. If your idea of a good evening is dinner, dog, ridgeline — that's not a vacation around here. That's a Tuesday.
Homes in Glenrosa and Smith Creek come with this lifestyle built in.
Want to see homes within walking distance of the trail? I'm happy to show you — and Bruno knows the way.
